Why tattoos hurt

Plain and simple, it hurts in some places on your body more than others. The amount of pain depends on how close the nerve endings are to the surface of your skin. According to expert tattoo artist Shotsie Gorman, the needle only pierces the skin a 32nd of an inch.

Here’s a quick, 40 second ultra slow motion video of a tattoo needle.

How to Create a Tattoo Design Concept

This video shows one way a tattoo concept gets worked out. Mainly by pulling artwork from various sources to create one final design.

Luke, the guy getting tattooed in this video changes his mind several times while the design is still on paper. This allows his decision to evolve naturally over time. Time is essential because it can make you change your mind about a design or allow you to feel more solid about your decision.

In the video below is the same tattoo as a final product. Pretty cool result! This is a testimony that it’s good to put thought into your tattoo designs and allow them to take their own shape before a needle actually touches your skin. Let inspiration come from the universe bit by bit and that way you can be happy with what you get!

5 funny tattoo articles

I think a prerequisite for getting a tattoo is having a sense of humor. With that in mind, here are several articles that dish it out.

1) Cracked Magazine – What the placement of the tattoo on your body actually means.

2) Cracked Magazine – If tattoos told the truth (Press the yellow button that says “START WITH NO. 20″)

3) Funkysmell.com – Quick comic strip about what your tattoo says about you

4) Holytaco.com – What you think it means vs. What it really means

5) Tastybooze.com – Tattoo placement, a variation on the Cracked Magazine take

(Note: I stayed away from “regrettable tattoo sites” because most of those are not really funny, but sad)

And this bonus video by red vs. blue is not an article but I had to include it in the post. A must for Halo fans View it here

3 things you didn’t know about tattoo designs

Do a search for “Tattoo Television” on Youtube and you’ll find a number of good videos under their channel. Though they are intended mainly for tattoo artists, they can give you some idea of what you can ask your artist to see if they know what they are doing. For example:

1) The brightness of a tattoo is determined more by it’s color strategy than by the pigments used

2) A design can be made bolder not by using more black, but by using it in just the right places

3) Tattoo artists who work in other artistic mediums are usually better at what they do
